Improvement is easy to understand when you are starting out.
You can see what you cannot do.
You practise it. You become better. Something that was difficult becomes easier. You practise some more.
For a while, progress is visible.
Then something changes.
You are still doing the things that made you better. You may even be doing them more seriously than before.
But the improvement becomes difficult to see.
You haven't necessarily become worse.
You have simply stopped becoming noticeably better.
This is usually where we say someone has reached their potential.
Perhaps.
But there is another possibility worth investigating first.
The method that brought you here may have given you most of the improvement it can.
The question then isn't how much harder you can work at it.
It is:
Where do you look next?
Start with what made you good
Before changing anything, understand what already works.
Ask yourself:
What am I genuinely good at today that I once wasn't?
Then ask:
What made me good at it?
Be specific.
Perhaps repetition improved your execution.
Perhaps strength allowed you to produce something you previously couldn't.
Perhaps experience improved your decisions.
Perhaps changing equipment helped.
Perhaps somebody corrected something fundamental.
Perhaps you simply spent thousands of hours doing it.
Whatever the answer, you have identified something important.
This was your engine of improvement.
Now comes the uncomfortable question:
Is that engine still producing meaningful improvement?
If it is, there may be no reason to search for something new.
Keep going.
But if you are putting more into the same process and receiving progressively less from it, you may have reached the boundary of that particular route to improvement.
Not necessarily your potential.
Just the route that brought you here.
Stephen Curry could already shoot
Stephen Curry did not need someone to teach him that shooting practice was important.
He could already shoot extraordinarily well.
Some of the training he subsequently adopted therefore looked unusual.
Tennis balls. Multiple basketballs. Visual signals. Additional decisions while handling the ball. Shooting while dealing with other demands.
Why?
Because shooting a basketball in a game isn't simply shooting.
Curry has to move, see defenders, control the ball, process changing information, create space, decide and then shoot accurately—all in very little time.
His trainer Brandon Payne progressively challenged some of those surrounding capabilities.
The question had changed.
It was no longer simply:
How can Curry shoot better?
It became:
What else can become better so that Curry's extraordinary shooting remains available under more demanding conditions?
That distinction matters.
Sometimes the next improvement isn't inside the thing you are already good at.
It is somewhere around it.
Find where your strength stops being enough
This gives us somewhere to begin our own search.
Don't immediately ask:
What am I bad at?
Ask:
Where does what I am good at stop being enough?
Imagine a batter who scores extremely quickly against pace.
Perhaps there is no obvious technical weakness.
But against a particular field, his scoring rate falls sharply.
That is interesting.
Or perhaps a bowler maintains excellent velocity and accuracy for four overs, but one of them deteriorates in the fifth.
Interesting.
A programmer may design excellent systems until organisational complexity reaches a particular level.
A business may acquire customers efficiently until it reaches a certain scale.
The boundary tells you something your normal performance does not.
It gives you somewhere to look.
What if you cannot find the boundary?
This may be the most difficult part of self-discovery.
Sometimes everything you normally do works.
There is no obvious weakness.
No recurring failure.
Nothing clearly needs fixing.
And yet improvement has stopped.
Then you may have to deliberately create conditions in which your existing strength is no longer sufficient.
Not recklessly.
Not randomly.
And certainly not by simply making everything harder.
Change one condition.
Less time.
More complexity.
Greater duration.
Different information.
Different equipment.
A different environment.
A higher required outcome.
Keep everything else as stable as possible.
Then observe.
At some point, something that was normally reliable may begin to deteriorate consistently.
You have not proved that you are bad at it.
You have found its current operating boundary.
This is one reason Curry's unusual training is interesting.
If normal ball handling no longer exposes the edge of your ability, increase the demand until it does.
Not necessarily because the artificial exercise resembles competition.
Sometimes the exercise is there simply to reveal something.
Ashwin treats practice as a laboratory
R Ashwin offers another way of thinking about this.
Throughout his career he has experimented with run-ups, releases, pace, wrist positions, actions and different ways of using the ball.
Not every experiment needs to become part of his bowling.
The experiment can still be valuable because it tells him something he did not previously know.
That is a very different relationship with practice.
Practice is no longer only where you perfect what you already know.
It can also become a laboratory in which you discover what else might be possible.
But Ashwin's experience gives us an equally important warning.
What you think is happening may not actually be happening.
An athlete can explain a failure perfectly—and still be wrong.
A batter gets bowled while leaving the ball and says:
“It swung much more than I expected.”
Video may show that the ball barely moved.
He simply hadn't covered his stumps.
His experience matters.
His explanation is still only a hypothesis.
That gives us one of the rules of self-discovery:
Observe before you explain.
Don't immediately fix what fails
Suppose you deliberately reduce the time available to perform something and your performance deteriorates.
You have found something.
But you haven't necessarily found the cause.
It would be easy to conclude:
“I need faster reactions.”
Perhaps.
But what actually disappeared?
Did you see the information too late?
Did you make the correct decision but begin moving too late?
Did your movement require too much time?
Did accuracy disappear?
Did force disappear?
Did you simply have no alternative solution available?
The boundary tells you where to investigate.
It does not automatically tell you what to fix.
That distinction protects self-discovery from becoming self-diagnosis.
Now question something you have accepted as true
Once you understand the boundary, ask:
What have I assumed must happen here?
To become more explosive, I must become less consistent.
To bowl faster, I must lose accuracy.
To produce higher quality, I must take longer.
To grow my business, I must employ more people.
Perhaps.
But ask another question before accepting it:
Is this trade-off fundamental, or is it simply a consequence of the way I currently produce the outcome?
Those are completely different things.
There is a difference between:
More power causes less control.
and:
The way I currently create more power reduces my control.
The first statement closes the investigation.
The second opens it.
This is where a plateau can become interesting again.
Federer changed something that already worked
Roger Federer had already won almost everything in tennis before moving to a larger racquet.
The change initially provided easier power but also created a control problem.
Over time, he learnt to use what the different equipment made available.
Years later, his ability to attack with the backhand had become an important part of another extraordinary period of his career.
The lesson isn't that larger racquets are better.
It is much simpler.
Sometimes changing one part of a successful system makes something possible that wasn't economical before.
That is what experimentation should search for.
Not difference.
Possibility.
Nadal expanded the system
Rafael Nadal provides another route.
The strengths that originally made him extraordinary didn't suddenly become weaknesses.
Instead, his game expanded.
His serve developed. His effectiveness across surfaces developed. His attacking options developed.
Sometimes the answer to a plateau isn't making your strongest capability another fraction better.
It is adding a capability that changes what your existing strengths can accomplish.
This gives us another self-discovery question:
What capability, if I possessed it, would make everything I already do more valuable?
That question can take you somewhere completely different from:
What should I improve?
Djokovic looked outside tennis
Novak Djokovic takes the search wider still.
Some of the areas he explored weren't tennis strokes at all.
Physical preparation. Flexibility. Recovery. Nutrition.
We should be careful with the mythology that grows around successful people. It is easy afterwards to identify one change and declare that it caused everything.
Djokovic himself has resisted such simplistic explanations.
But the important lesson remains.
He was willing to search outside the obvious location of the skill.
If your objective is to continue producing exceptional tennis deep into a five-set match, the limiting factor may not be tennis technique.
And if you only search where you have always searched, you may never find it.
Experiment. Don't reinvent yourself.
Eventually, self-discovery must produce a hypothesis.
Now test it.
But before doing so, establish something important:
Home Base.
Home Base is the last version of what you do that you know works.
Know it.
Measure it where possible.
Protect it.
Then experiment around it.
Change one meaningful thing.
Observe what improves.
Observe what deteriorates.
And remember:
An experiment is not a commitment.
This matters because experiments sometimes fail.
They are supposed to.
When getting worse doesn't mean you are wrong
Tiger Woods provides an extraordinary example.
After dominating the 1997 Masters, he began rebuilding parts of a golf swing that had just produced one of the greatest performances the sport had seen.
His results initially deteriorated.
Then came an extraordinary period of dominance.
So temporary deterioration cannot automatically mean:
Stop.
Sometimes a new solution requires adaptation before its advantage becomes available.
But this creates a dangerous idea.
Because almost any failed experiment can then be defended by saying:
“Give it more time.”
We therefore need another question.
Is it not working, or not working yet?
When an experiment makes you worse, separate three possibilities.
The capability is developing, but isn't reliable yet.
There should still be evidence underneath the result: something measurable is moving in the intended direction.
Or:
The change works, but doesn't improve the outcome that matters.
Perhaps bat speed increased but scoring effectiveness did not.
Or:
The change improves one thing while damaging something more valuable.
Power increased.
Control disappeared.
Nothing has been gained.
This is why the measure cannot simply be:
Did the thing I changed improve?
The real question is:
Did the whole system become better?
And sometimes you should go back
This may be the hardest part of experimentation.
You tried something.
You invested time in it.
You wanted it to work.
It didn't.
Go back.
Not emotionally.
Not apologetically.
Return to Home Base.
That is not failure.
You started with:
“Perhaps the next improvement is here.”
You ran the experiment.
Now you know:
“Probably not.”
You haven't improved your performance.
But you have improved your understanding of the search space.
That matters.
Because self-discovery should never become endless tinkering.
The purpose isn't to keep changing.
The purpose is to find something better.
The journey begins again
Eventually an experiment works.
Something that wasn't previously possible becomes possible.
The benefit survives outside the experiment.
It doesn't destroy something more valuable.
It becomes repeatable.
Now it can become part of your normal way of doing things.
Your Home Base moves.
For a while, you improve again.
Then, perhaps months or years later, something familiar happens.
Progress slows.
You work harder.
Very little changes.
And once again you wonder whether this is simply as good as you can become.
Perhaps it is.
There are real limits.
But before accepting that answer, begin the search again.
Ask:
What made me good?
Is it still making me better?
Where does my strength stop being enough?
If I cannot see the boundary, how can I expose it safely?
What actually changes when I cross it?
What have I accepted as unavoidable?
What else might make the outcome possible?
How can I test that without destroying what already works?
What does the evidence tell me: persist, modify, or return?
You may not find the answer immediately.
That isn't the point.
Because perhaps the most important skill once you become good at something isn't knowing how to improve it.
It is knowing how to search when improvement is no longer obvious.
